Word & Weight: Pushup

Word & Weight

Matthew 6:28-34
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

When we worry, we take our faith and throw it out the window! Do we not think that GOD who holds the universe in his hands will care for us? Matthew shows that he cares for the birds and the flowers, his beautiful creations, how much more will he care for US, the crowning of his creation here on earth. When we worry, we take faith in God and replace it with fear of circumstances. It's a lack in trust and he calls us to trust him fully with all things. It's a practice, like ALL things we discipline ourselves in, but the reward is GREAT.

The Pushup:
A great move for shoulders, chest and triceps, the push up is a BASIC, old school move which is extremely effective!! I consider it a full body move, it engages the core and can give a great body weight workout!!

For a basic push up, from a prone position, keep your hands under your shoulders and your elbows coming out wide as you bend your elbows and lower your body down. Check your hips and be sure they are straight as in a plank position. Your feet can be wide for stability or narrow for more of a challenge! Keep your eyes on the ground in front of you and try to keep your head from dropping!

Variations include:
Tricep pushup--elbows coming back
Lifting one leg, alternating as you push up
Holding a medicine ball under one arm as you push
Rolling the medicine ball side to side between pushup
Balancing your hands on a bosu
Balancing your feet on a bosu
balancing BOTH on a bosu (hands and feet)
Feet up on a bench
Feet balancing on a medicine ball
Explosive push ups, or plyo push ups!
and ON AND ON AND ON!

There is never ending fun and variation with the pushup even though it is one of the most basic moves to do and can be done anywhere! The challenge of pushing your own body weight and the variations involved makes the pushup one of my very favorite exercises!

Have a GREAT week and remember FRIDAY I announce the winner of our 60 day long New Years Reverse Resolution Challenge!! It could be YOU!
