Self Control Part two: a commandment is calling

About three years ago I was listening to Terri Savelle Foy speak about dreams and goals and afterwards I spent just a few minutes with her and she told me I had an anointing for discipline. This year, I realized that as Christians we all have the same anointing, because we have the holy spirit in us , we all have Christs spirit in us. The same works that Christ did we will do also and greater still. John 14:12:  "I assure you: The one who believes in Me will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.

So how was I told that I had an anointing for discipline? I think maybe what would be a Better wording is a gift for it. So if I have a gift for discipline, what still does it look like? Well, self control or discipline is a fruit of the spirit so it can be grown and cultivated. As a GIFTING, I have to open it and use it. We all have tons of untapped potential, Like Terri Savelle Foy says your calling is calling, but will you answer? God intends for us to BE a certain something-- will we step up to it?

Will we open that gifting we have and USE it? God had called us all differently, some he has called to be dancers, some actors, some mothers and some missionaries... All of us he has called to shine his light. One way is through discipline and self control.

We are actually commanded to be alert, aware and self controlled. Yes commanded!! We don't like to hear it, but the bible says God expects it of us. If we do not take seriously what God commands us to do, we are not set apart from the world and if we are not set apart by our actions, by OUR choice of actions, we are as good as telling the world, steeped in their sins... It's ok. Your sin will destroy you, but keep going, don't let me away you, make you uncomfortable or show you a better way.

Does everyone have the same calling? No way! Does everyone work the same, workout the same and work on self control in same areas? Of course not, we will know in our spirits what God is prompting us to do and what areas to give over to him and follow his call of self control.

Just like I said in the first post, we are to be aware and alert to our behavior. We prayerfully ask for help to be aware when we over or under eat, when we use food to cover emotions. We listen when he asks us to care for our temple, we do, we walk, move, eat nourishing foods. We are aware, and ARE set apart to shine for others as Christ commanded and asked of us. Don't get me wrong, I don't do this perfectly!  But I do what I can and God does the rest. In fact like the Apostle Paul says, when I am weak, THEN I am strong, because in my weakness and imperfection, God shines his perfection brighter yet.  When I am not in contest prep mode, I enjoy healthy and sometimes, not very healthy treats in moderation, but God loves to see us enjoy things!! Having a delicious ice cream cone, isn't sin, being in bondage to overeating or putting food before God IS sin. He wants us to enjoy in moderation, everything but him--go OVERBOARD!!

So I don't stress it when I fall short. God promised in the bible that he will complete the good work he started in me. HE is the good work in me, with my self control and the situations he puts me in so I can USE the self control, I am given the chance to let him shine.

Success Story: Anni Mairs

It's been way too long since a success story and I have an awesome one for you!

Anni Mairs is a local gal right here in Minneapolis Minnesota and she is the FOUNDER of Force Fitness, a workout program she created. As you read below, on top of founding and starring in the Force Fitness DVD collection, she is a lot like the rest of us, just out to see results in her journey.

This past spring, Anni competed in her first Bikini Competition through Fitness America, so she is definitely seeing and delivering results! Read about her journey and seasoned fitness advice below:

I started distance running when I was 17 years old. I am now 53, and since my first historic run all those years ago, I have lettered in Cross Country and Track, ran two Grandma's Marathons in Duluth MN, broke an indoor club track record by running 30 miles without stopping, managed and owned fitness clubs, became a group fitness instructor and developed my own fitness format and starred in five workout DVD's for in-home use.

I was a very heavy kid. I was trapped in the cycle of yoyo diets and fluctuated in weight between the ages of 17 and 40, sometimes upwards of 50 pounds.
So, what I have learned in the last 36 years? What words of inspiration/motivation am I about to offer here?

What we eat, how we exercise and how we choose to live our lives is personal. Everyone does it differently.

There is no perfect way to eat right. There is no perfect way to get into shape. In fact, there is no perfection. The most important and responsible thing you can do for you is to ask yourself:

What do YOU want? What lifestyle is perfectly authentic for YOU?!

Once you answer that question honestly you will be able to get and stay on a routine that works for you. You will have your ups and downs, but getting real with WHY you have made certain goals for yourself will seriously lessen the chances of falling off the wagon!

Anni as starring in her own home
workout DVD: Force Fitness

Listen to your heart. Once you know what you want to do, surround yourself with professionals who will help you achieve YOUR goals. If a diet or exercise routine doesn't feel right, switch it up until you find one that works! The same thing with diet.

We are bombarded with expectations, images and gimmicks everyday. I believe that the answer - the real, organic and authentic answer - is already inside of us. If you always listen to that, trust, do the work and continue to ever move forward on your road to wellness, you will never fail.

Wow, those are words of inspiration and from a woman who has lived it! Anni has seen success in life, business AND fitness, she is definitely one to follow! You can check out Force Fitness here at the main website or follow Force Fitness on Facebook as well. And watch the stages for Anni as she continues to succeed in her own journey of fitness and health!

Do you know someone who is a success story or are YOU one yourself?? Contact me at Mary @ Fit this girl dot com to be featured for your journey, success and general AWESOMENESS!! There is room for us ALL to rock!

Self Control Part 1: Awareness

Galatians 5:22-23

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

I love fruit. I am not eating it right now because of my contest prep, but I do love it. Ripe with antioxidants, fat burning, fueling recovery, some choice fruits are amazing for you clean diet!

I also love the choice fruit that the bible talks about above, the fruit of the spirit. MANY people know about the fruit of the spirit and talk about it as something all Christians should have and be reaping! Self control is a fruit that I have been told I am anointed with. A sweet preacher prayed over me once and told me I had an anointing of discipline, I believed her, but was only seeing a small harvest.

With our nutrition, exercise, time, social media, people strive for more self control. Other words for it are temperance, discipline, abstinence, steadfastness, moderation, willpower. It seems like the strongest people have it, they muster it from deep inside and STRIVE to achieve it.

But self control is a FRUIT.
In the simplest analogy fruit doesn't fall from the sky. It is PLANTED, WATERED, CULTIVATED, and harvested. That is a process, it is something that is DONE and it is work. "But I thought the Fruit of the Spirit was something that we just HAVE as a result of God in us!"

It is something we have, in that seed... we have it planted by God when we accept his spirit.  We water it with time in the bible, we cultivate it as we go to church, refine and prune it's branches as we spend time with other Christians and grow in God and then we see the harvest.

We do it God's way. You can pray for more self control and God will put people and situations in your path that will allow you to LEARN self control. Yes, Learn, we can LEARN it. The analogy of planted fruit, watered, cultivated etc are ALL learning processes, situations.

FIRST, 1 Thessalonians, 1 Peter, Timothy, Titus, many books reference self control along with being alert, being aware. I Thessalonians says, "Let us not be like others who are asleep, be alert and self controlled." When we are alert and aware, we understand what is going on around us, we see things as they really ARE. We know what we are doing and we know WHY. Some people call it being "present".

I Peter says to be alert, clear minded. If we are NOT clear minded, we have others who can teach us, spiritual leaders, trainers, nutritionists, they can help us LEARN what we do not know, open our eyes and become ALERT and AWARE so we can grow.

Are you eating too much? Are you eating enough? Do you know how to find out? Do you eat mindlessly throughout the day? Do you graze? Do you eat when you are sad, when you are lonely, do you see patterns in your eating or can you ASK someone to help you see patterns. Do you workout only on rainy days, only when there is an event you are preparing for? Do you workout when you are stressed out, do you workout compulsively to fill a void? Do you feel your muscles and feel your body's strength when you workout or is it just so mentally hard that you can't differentiate the two?

Do you eat in the car, in front of the TV, OR do you sit, with a plate with the rest of your family at a table and enjoy your meal. These are questions you can ask yourself to become aware or alert to how you eat, when and WHY, and your activity habits. Once you do, you can seek to LEARN different methods. It's not really self-control, but a relearning of what you knew, the result will BE self-control.

Step one, be aware, be alert. Those without God are as if asleep, not aware, not self controlled. We are called Sons and Daughters of the day and of the light and God is requiring this of us, that is part of step two! Next week!

Where do you lack self control most? Have you prayed to learn self control?
